WASHINGTON — The US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) recently published the Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report, which stated that 74.5 million hogs were on US farms as of June 1, up 1% from June 2023.

The survey data used by NASS came from 4,524 operators around the United States during the first half of June. 

Of the 74.5 million hogs, 68.5 million were market hogs, while the remaining 6.01 million were kept for breeding.

NASS noted that between March and May 2024, US hog and pig producers weaned an average of 11.56 pigs per litter.

US hog producers intend 2.96 million sows farrow between June and August 2024 as well as 2.94 million sows farrow between September and November 2024.

As of June, Iowa hog producers once again represented the largest inventory among the states at 24.6 million head. Minnesota accounted for the second largest inventory at 9.2 million head, and North Carolina the third largest at 7.6 million.
