DAVENPORT, IOWA — Local Iowa officials recently confirmed that the Fair Oaks Foods bacon production facility is back under construction.
A report by the Quad City Times stated that work on the plant started again at the Eastern Iowa Industrial Center on Sept. 4.
Plans for the facility were first announced in June 2022 for a 150,000-square-foot building for bacon production. In that announcement, Fair Oaks expected the project to cost $134 million and bring 247 full-time jobs to the Quad City area.
After the groundbreaking in September 2022, the work was paused in August 2023 over rising construction costs, according to the report.
Information from the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce stated in 2022 that the annual economic impact of the facility was estimated at $182 million.
Progress on the building permits for the facility can be found here.
According to the City of Davenport website, the construction company Austin Co. permit expires in August 2025.
Over the last two years, the Davenport City Council has approved a 60% Tax Increment Finance (TIF) rebate for the company for 15 years. The company also applied for a $3.4 million sales tax refund on construction materials from the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA).
Founded in 1985, Fair Oaks produces and supplies various protein products, including bacon, meatballs, pork and turkey sausage to food service, national grocery stores and quick-serve restaurants.
