OTTAWA, ONTARIO – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed that three commercial poultry flocks in British Columbia were infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
The agency said this was the first outbreak in Canada since April 2024.
According to information from CFIA, it was the first HPAI infection for British Columbia during this year. The agency did not disclose the number of birds or what type of poultry for the new outbreak in three flocks.
One week ago the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) previewed a report that lifted zoning restrictions in all provinces of Canada in regards to HPAI. CFIA revoked the last remaining primary control zone around an outbreak near a farm in Saskatchewan on Oct. 2.
HPAI was not seen in a commercial flock since February 2024 in the province of Alberta. The last case in a non-commercial flock was confirmed on April 10 in Quebec.
