GREELEY, COLO. — Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., a subsidiary of JBS S.A., released its 2023 Sustainability Report, which presented advancements in its global operations.
The report examined sustainability goals in the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Europe and the United Kingdom.
“In 2023, Pilgrim’s made measurable strides in our sustainability efforts because of our relentless focus on ways to improve across our global footprint,” said Fabio Sandri, chief executive officer for Pilgrim’s. “There are so many efforts to take pride in – whether it’s our reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, improvements in safety, how we’re tackling food waste, our dedication to humane animal handling, the ways we are partnering with our suppliers, or the ongoing investments in our local communities around the world.”
The company stated some of its results from the 2023 report which included a 17% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) since 2019. It also noted a 130+ scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions reduction projects which approved implementation in Pilgrim’s facilities.
Pilgrim’s said that 14.2% of the total electricity used in the company’s global operations was renewable in 2023.
For food safety and quality, the poultry producer also claimed that 100% of US and European facilities were certified by independent third-party audits that follow GFSI standards.
Finally, Pilgrim’s said it saw a 24% improvement in the company’s Global Safety Index performance since 2022.
“I believe that sustainability must be embedded in our business as we face the global challenge of feeding a growing population,” said Sandri. “We will continue to explore innovative ways to lead and grow in this area, striving to make a meaningful impact.”
On Pilgrim’s website, the company still kept the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
