DETROIT — EW Grobbel, a Detroit-based meat company known for its corned beef, recently announced its plans to acquire the assets of Freirich Foods Inc.

As part of the deal, production for Freirich will move to Detroit, Mich., from Salisbury, NC.

“This acquisition marks an exciting new chapter for both of our organizations,” said Jason Grobbel, president of EW Grobbel. “We are honored to carry forward the legacy of Freirich and look forward to continuing to provide the same exceptional products and service that customers have relied on for generations.”

After the announcement, Grobbel said that the transition would start immediately, with all Freirich customers, brokers, and stakeholders receiving updates as they are integrated into the company system.

Paul Bardinas, the chief executive officer of Freirich, will remain involved throughout the transition and beyond, providing guidance and incorporating the brand that’s now in its fourth generation.

“Although operations will relocate, the products will remain exactly as customers know and love,” EW Grobbell said in its announcement. “Freirich’s renowned recipes, standards and flavors will continue to honor its legacy. Grobbel is dedicated to safeguarding and building upon Freirich’s values and traditions, ensuring the brand’s success and longevity for years to come.”

Previous reports stated that Freirich, known for corned beef, roast beef and pastrami, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2024.

Earlier in 2024, EW Grobbel acquired a 90,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in St. Clair Shores, Mich. The facility was previously operated by Alexander & Hornung, which closed in 2023.
