KANSAS CITY, MO. — As the frozen food market surpasses $90 billion in sales, manufacturers are aiming to capture consumer interest with new formats, protein-packed formulations and convenient offerings.

Pizza manufacturer Rustica Foods expanded its portfolio with a Detroit-style pan pizza line. The products feature a dough similar to focaccia or Sicilian-style doughs, according to the company. Varieties include double pepperoni, four cheese and garlic, meat lovers and deluxe.

“We created this new pizza segment to offer an elevated pizza experience that captures the essence of Detroit-style pan pizza," said Richard Morgante, president and chief executive officer at Rustica Foods Inc.

Premier Nutrition Co. LLC and De Wafelbakkers built upon their existing line of protein breakfast offerings with frozen waffles and miniature pancakes. The waffles, available in plain protein and chocolate chip protein flavors, offer 13 to 14 grams of protein per serving, and the mini pancakes contain 15 grams of protein.

“Premier Nutrition is thrilled to introduce three new delicious frozen varieties to our innovative line of protein-filled breakfast options,” said Nick Stiritz, general manager for Premier Protein US. “Protein is an essential nutrient that helps your body build and maintain muscle. Plus, it helps you feel fuller for longer which can make sticking to your daily nutrition goals a little bit easier.”

Vegetable maker Green Giant has debuted three frozen side options. The company’s smashed potatoes come in an easy-to-prepare format, requiring no washing, peeling or chopping, with flavors like garlic parmesan and sea salt and black pepper. The corn cob bites offer 1-inch cuts of corn on the cob in flavors such as butter, salt and pepper and Mexican-style street corn. Green Giant’s vegetable ramen combines a blend of vegetables, ramen noodles and broth in varieties like chicken flavored, beef flavored, garlic soy and spicy chicken flavored.

“Crispy smashed potatoes, corn cob bites and veggie ramen offer fun twists to classic favorites, while remaining a convenient, and affordable option that doesn't sacrifice taste,” said Kristen Thompson, president of frozen and vegetables and senior vice president of B&G Foods.
