WASHINGTON – On July 1, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, totaled 10.1 million head, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board, U. S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.). The inventory was 3% above July 1, 2009.

Included in the inventory were 6.25 million steers and steer calves, up 4% from the previous year. This group accounted for 62% of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.77 million head, up 1% from 2009.


Feedlot placements during June totaled 1.63 million, 17% above 2009. Net placements were 1.57 million head. Placements of cattle and calves during June weighing less than 600 lbs. were 440,000; 600-699 lbs. were 300,000; 700-799 lbs. were 408,000; and 800 lbs. and greater were 480,000.

During June, marketings of fed cattle totaled 2.00 million, slightly above 2009.

Other disappearance totaled 55,000 during June, 4% below 2009.

On July 1, cattle on feed from all U.S. feedlots totaled 12.0 million, up 3% from the 11.6 million on July 1, 2009. Cattle on feed in feedlots with 1,000 or more head accounted for 84% of the total cattle on feed on July 1, down slightly from July 1, 2009.
