LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas is hosting a conference where ranchers, breeders and lawmakers are gathering to try and persuade the nation that horses should be slaughtered, processed and shipped to other countries as food, according to The Associated Press.

Called The Summit of the Horse, the event continued on Jan. 5 with discussions on how to counter emotional pleas made by animal-rights groups opposed to horse slaughter. United Horsemen of Wyoming helped organize the event that began on Jan. 4.


Congress closed the last US horse slaughterhouse doors in 2007. But supporters charge horses are no different than lambs, cows, pigs or other animals regularly treated as food. Reopening horse slaughterhouses would create jobs, proponents say.
