WINNIPEG – On Nov. 9, a fire at Maple Leaf Foods’ Winnipeg plant caused an estimated $2 million in smoke and water damages, according to news reports. Fire fighters arrived at the meat processing plant shortly after 3 p.m. No one was injured.

Fire officials determined the blaze started on the facility’s roof. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Evacuated plant employees waited on city buses while emergency crews battled to extinguish the fire. Fire crews left the scene around 8 p.m.

Prepared meats production was stopped to investigate the fire, but ham-boning production is taking place as scheduled, according to a company spokesperson.
