WASHINGTON – Last night the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council affirmed hot dog safety in an interview on John Stewart’s “The Daily Show.” Janet Riley, American Meat Institute senior vice president of public affairs and council president, defended hot-dog safety and nutrition against claims by a pseudo-medical group with animal-rights ties that compared hot dogs to cigarettes.

The comparison was “preposterous,” Riley said, and hot dogs have nutrition labels on them – not warning labels, she added. The Daily Show crew conducted the interview at AMI offices and enjoyed grilled hot dogs while there.

“While The Daily Show may appear on the Comedy Channel, research shows that growing number of Americans rely on the show as a key source of news and information,” Riley said. “Stewart’s credibility scores are on par with many leading journalists and we were gratified to take our message to this increasingly important source of information.”
