EMPORIA, Kan. – On Nov. 29, Tyson Foods Inc. handed the City of Emporia a $23,895 check to buy an outdoor warning and bilingual notification system that will alert Emporia residents of dangerous weather and other emergencies in the future. The new system will supplement the city’s existing notification system.
Included in this new system are a siren, and a method to broadcast instructions and other vital information in English and Spanish. Tyson’s donation will pay for one new site to be added to the notification system.
“Our commitment is to ensure the protection of life, liberty and property,” said Gary Smith, chief of police. “This is a wonderful gift that will benefit the residents of Emporia for many years to come and help the police department focus on its mission.”
The new notification system has been ordered and Chief Smith estimates it will be installed by Christmas.
More than 900 people work at Tyson’s Emporia plant and supporting operations.
