An FSIS plant inspector uncovered the problem during a routine inspection. While reviewing the spice blend ingredient statement and the finished product label, the inspector discovered wheat was listed in the spice blend but not declared in the ingredient statement of the finished product label. No reports of adverse reactions or illnesses due to consumption of these products have been received.
While a person can be allergic to virtually any food, eight foods account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions: eggs, fish, milk, peanut, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat. Some of these allergens may be outgrown, but others, such as peanut and shellfish, will remain lifelong allergies, according to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN).
Allergic reactions have been reported to corn, gelatin, meat (beef, chicken, mutton and pork), seeds (sesame, sunflower, and poppy being the most common), and spices such as caraway, coriander, garlic and mustard, FAAN concludes.
