Some farms in one of the country's major pig breeding areas were reported to have fed pigs with an illegal drug to promote production of lean meat, according to a Reuters report. This pork was then sold to the market and to Henan Shuanghui Investment & Development Co. Ltd., the country's top meat processor. Shuanghui has already shut down the processor affected by the contamination.
As a result of these reports, authorities in the central province of Henan closed 16 pig farms and sealed 134 tons of pork products.
