WASHINGTON – South Korea said it intends to issue a temporary duty-free import quota for 50,000 metric tons of chicken, one million breeder chicks and 50,000 tons of ingredients for livestock processing, according to the April 8 edition of the National Chicken Council’s Washington Report. The total quota is reported to be 110,000 tons of poultry and livestock products.

South Korea’s action is a part of the government’s effort to help stabilize food prices that have been impacted by significant domestic animal disease problems, primarily avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease. South Korea’s announced intentions will not become official until the report is published in the government’s official gazette, a Foreign Agricultural Service official explained to NCC. No timetable for the publication in the gazette was available.
