WASHINGTON – For March, US and Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs totaled 75.8 million head, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board, US Department of Agriculture. This was up 1 percent from March 2010, but down 2 percent from March 2009.

Totaling 7.10 million head, the breeding inventory was up slightly from last year and last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 68.7 million head, was up 1 percent from last year but down 1 percent from last quarter. At 35.1 million head, the pig crop was up 1 percent from 2010 but down 3 percent from 2009. During this same period, sows farrowed totaled 3.56 million head, down 1 percent from last year and down 5 percent from 2009.


On March 1, US inventory of all hogs and pigs was 64.0 million head, which was up 1 percent from March 1, 2010, but down 3 percent from March 1, 2009. The breeding inventory, at 5.79 million head, was up slightly from last year and last quarter. Totaling 58.2 million head, market hog inventory was up 1 percent from last year, but down 1 percent from last quarter. The pig crop, at 28.0 million head, was up 1 percent from 2010 but down 2 percent from 2009.

During this period, sows farrowed totaled 2.86 million head, down 1 percent from 2010 and down 5 percent from 2009.

On April 1, Canadian inventory of all hogs and pigs totaled 11.8 million head. This was up 1 percent from April 1, 2010, but down 1 percent from April 1, 2009. The breeding inventory, at 1.31 million head, was down slightly from last year and last quarter.

Totaling 10.5 million head, market hog inventory was up 2 percent from last year but down 1 percent from last quarter. The pig crop, at 7.1 million head, was down 2 percent from 2010 and down 5 percent from 2009. Sows farrowed during this period totaled 708,000 head, down 2 percent from last year and down 6 percent from 2009.
