BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – After more than 120 years in business, Grote & Weigel Meats is closing its doors, according to The Harford Courant. The company, founded in 1890 in Rockville, Conn., has scheduled an auction for its property and equipment on Feb. 28, according to Gary Katz, vice president of Capital Recovery in Enfield, which is handling the sale.
Longtime customer of Grote & Weigel, Rock Aronheim, owner of Doogie’s hot dog emporium, reported he was told about the company closing by Michael Greiner, president of Grote & Weigel. Doogie’s has been buying its signature 2-foot-long hot dog from Grote & Weigel for years. Aronheim is now trying to find another supplier for his specialty item.
Grote & Weigel produces hot dogs, specialty sausages and delicatessen meats, including kielbasa, andouille, bratwurst, bologna, ham, turkey and mortadella.
Grote & Weigel has not responded to several phone calls and walk-in requests for interviews by The Courant over the last couple weeks.
