KITCHENER, Ontario – Maple Leaf Foods Inc. was fined $200,000 for violating Canada’s Occupational Health and Safety Act after two workers were injured in separate incidents.
On July 26, 2010, a worker’s arm was crushed after removing a jam from a box-making machine. The company was fined $100,000 for failing to ensure the machine’s moving parts were stopped and blocked before the worker removed the jam.
The second incident occurred Dec. 29, 2012 at Maple Leaf Foods’ Kitchener facility. A worker was injured while trying to remove a piece of plastic wrap from a conveyor system. The conveyor activated when the plastic wrap was dislodged, pulling the workers hand into the equipment. The company was fined $100,000 for failure to ensure the worker was provided information, instruction and supervision on safety procedures for cleaning and locking out the machine.
Justice of the Peace Michael Cuthbertson imposed the fines. The court also imposed a 25 percent victim fine surcharge, as required by law. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist crime victims.
