TAMA, Iowa – The Iowa Premium Beef packing plant is set to open this June in Tama, Iowa, bringing more than 300 jobs to the area, according to the Times-Republican.

Roy Wiggs of Iowa Premium Beef said the company will specialize in custom-cut orders with 90 percent of sales expected domestically.

The plant originally opened in 1971 as Tama Pack until IBP closed operations in 1999. It has been open a few times since under new management only to close each time.

When operations go into full swing, a total of 800 head of cattle are expected to be slaughtered each day at the facility.

Lindi Roelofse, executive director of the Tama County Economic Development Commission, said to have the plant back up and running will be a good thing for the county.

"We want our real estate assets to be put to the best possible use," Roelofse said. "That is one of the mega properties we have in Tama County."

Roelofse said representatives with Iowa Premium Beef have told her every single job at the plant will have wages at or above Tama County's average wage.
