Broiler-type chicks hatched during 2010 totaled 9.28 billion, up 2 percent from 2009, according to data from US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Breeders had intended to place 85 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2010, an increase of 2 percent from 2009.

Placement of broiler chicks on feed for meat production in the 19-state weekly program totaled 8.81 billion during the 52 week period ending Jan. 1, 2011, up 2 percent from the comparable period in 2010.

Egg-type chicks hatched during 2010 totaled 489 million, up 5 percent from 2009, NASS said. Breeders had intended placements of 2.98 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2010, down 12 percent from 2009.

Turkey poults hatched during 2010 retreated slightly from 2009, with 281 million hatched. Net poult placements totaled 275 million, a slight increase from 2009.
