WASHINGTON – The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is proposing to remove three substances from a list of substances prohibited for use in meat and poultry products, the agency announced on May 7.
FSIS would add approved uses of sodium benzoate, sodium propionate and benzoic acid to a list of approved substances contained in the agency’s directive system. The US Food and Drug Administration would continue to approve new uses of these substances in meat and poultry for safety. FSIS would approve them for suitability.
