ABERDEEN, SD – Northern Beef Packers officials had hoped to open the $110 million beef processing plant on July 21, but the opening has again been delayed and no new date for opening has been set, according to the Associated Press.
The project began in 2006, but the plant opening has been delayed by financial issues, local opposition, a recession and flooding. The 420,000-sq.-ft. plant will process an estimated 200 cattle per day, eventually expanding to 1,500 head per day. Roughly 200 people currently work at the plant, but that number is expected to reach 650 when the plant is fully operational.
