PLEASANTON, Calif. – Safeway announced on Sept. 24 a voluntary recall of a variety of ground beef items sold in Oregon, Washington State and Montana on concerns the items may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The grocery retailer was told by Interstate Meat Distributors that ground beef products produced for Safeway included trimmings that were subject to Edmonton, Alberta-based XL Foods Inc.'s expanded recall. No illnesses have been reported in connection to the recalled products.

The affected products have Sell By dates of Sept. 7, 2012 to Sept. 23, 2012. The retailer is asking customers to check all ground beef in their refrigerators and freezers.

On Sept. 21, The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a health alert to food service establishments and consumers regarding raw, boneless beef trim processed by XL Foods and imported from Canada.

The products subject to the Canadian recall were distributed in California, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. FSIS said the beef trim products may have been further processed into various products, such as ground beef, ground beef patties, beef jerky and pastrami.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) again expanded a recall to include additional ground beef products processed by Edmonton, Alberta-based XL Foods. The recall is part of an ongoing food safety investigation into ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The CFIA expanded the recall when the agency included additional provinces. The scope of the recall expanded again Sept. 20 to include unlabeled and/or unbranded products. Now, more products have been added to a list of items included in the recall.
