GRAYSON, Ky. – A man died at a Smithfield Foods, Inc. processing plant in Grayson, Ky., according to local news reports.
Drue Gay of Olive Hill, Ky., was pronounced dead the night of Sept. 2 in an area of the plant where hams are smoked, the Journal-Times (Ky.) reported. Gay was an electrician for Smithfield Foods, according to an obituary in The Morhead News. The obituary describes his death as an industrial accident. Autopsy results are pending.
Representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Smithfield are investigating the matter.
Smithfield officials did not respond to a Meat&Poultry inquiry regarding this incident. The Grayson facility is operated by Smithfield Packing, Inc., a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods.
