DUBLIN – Silvercrest Foods suspended production after additional tests of its meat products were found to contain traces of horse meat, according to news reports. The Associated Press said the company pinpointed the source of the horsemeat to an imported ingredient.
Silvercrest Foods announced it would suspend operations indefinitely pending further investigation into the cause of the contamination.
Silvercrest Foods recalled 10 million frozen hamburgers that were distributed to supermarkets across the United Kingdom. The recall came after the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said the agency found traces of horse meat in a batch of beef supermarket burgers in Ireland. Silvercrest Foods is the second-largest beef processor in Ireland.
