NASHVILLE, TENN. — A Lincoln County poultry farm is being investigated by health officials in Tennessee and federal authorities after tests found a strain of H7 avian influenza virus, according to The Associated Press. The strain, however, poses minimal risk to human health and is not the strain associated with human and poultry outbreaks in other countries, the Tennessee Agriculture Department said in a statement. The strain can cause slight illness in poultry, officials added.
On May 1, a preliminary test indicated there was a possibility of avian flu on a farm that provides breeding stock for poultry farms. The U.S. Department of Agriculture completed more testing. None of the poultry have entered the food supply.
This is the same strain found on a poultry farm in Giles County last week, but there is no apparent connection, state officials said.
