WASHINGTON – Wittenberg, Wis.-based Nueske's Applewood Smoked Meats recalled approximately 4,454 lbs. of liver paté because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The product contains the milk protein sodium caseinate, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label, FSIS said. Nueske's discovered the problem during a label review. A shipment of labels incorrectly omitted the sodium caseinate, and the labels had been in use since Dec. 15, 2012. FSIS and Nueske's have not received any reports of illness associated with consumption of the product.
FSIS said the products subject to recall are 10-oz. vacuum packed packages of "Nueske's Applewood Smoked Liver Paté".

Each package bears the establishment number “Est. 8926” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The packages can be further identified by the use by dates “2/13/13C,” “2/19/13C,” “2/20/13C,” or “3/16/13C,” or the Julian code dates “200350C,” “200357C,” “300015C,” or “300022C.” The products were produced on various dates between Dec. 15, 2012 and Jan. 22, 2013 and were distributed for retail sale nationwide.
