SUNBURY, PA. — Weis Markets Inc. plans to purchase the stores of Binghamton, N.Y.-based Giant Markets located in Binghamton, Vestal, Endicott, Endwell and Johnson City. The company expects the purchase to be completed by Aug. 21.

"This acquisition is an excellent strategic fit for our company. Giant Markets is the market leader in Broome County where they have excellent locations, modern stores and a strong market presence," said Jonathan Weis, vice-chairman, Weis Markets.

Weis Markets operates 154 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia. It generated $2.4 billion in sales in 2008.
