County officials abandon poultry-plant bid
09.22.2014
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC – Cumberland County officials decided to end efforts to land a Sanderson Farms Inc. poultry processing plant, according to WRAL.com.
County officials said there weren't enough votes to approve an incentives package. However, a deal isn't entirely out of the question. Fayetteville could work out an agreement with Sanderson, or the company could buy land not associated with the site under consideration — the Cedar Creek Business Center — which is county-owned.
The project entailed an investment of more than $100 million with the potential to create 1,000 new jobs. But the plant faced community opposition. More than 100 individuals attended a Cumberland County Commissioners meeting to protest locating the poultry-processing plant in the area.
