A Subway spokeswoman told Reuters that the company is investigating the allegations. Local news reports said workers at the Xi Hai Guo Ji store changed expiration and production dates on meat, produce and other items to extend their use. Local news reports also said food-safety regulators in Beijing have launched an investigation into the allegations.
"We have been made aware of these claims and are investigating them," the company said in a statement. "This is not representative of the diligent Subway owners and sandwich artists in the Subway system. We will investigate and enforce our strict operational processes."
McDonald's Corp. and Yum! Brands International became ensnared in a food-safety scandal after food quality and food-safety problems allegedly were discovered at Shanghai Husi, a division of the OSI Group LLC, a supplier to certain food companies in China, including McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut.
Subway doesn’t own any restaurants, according to the company's web site. The restaurants are owned by more than 21,000 franchisees in more than 100 countries around the world. There are 485 Subway restaurants in China.
