WASHINGTON – A Tyson Foods Inc. plant in Sedalia, Missouri, launched a recall of approximately 132,520 lbs. of fully cooked chicken nuggets because the products may be contaminated with foreign matter, the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported.

The company received "a small number" of consumer complaints regarding foreign material in some chicken nugget products, FSIS said. Tyson Foods said the plastic material ranged in size from 21 mm in length to 6.5 mm in diameter and may have come from a round, hard plastic rod used to connect a plastic transfer belt.

“The firm said the products pass through a metal detector, but the plastic is not detectable to this technology,” FSIS said in a recall notice. However, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions.

The affected products were produced on July 18 and include:

5-lb. bag containing “Tyson FULLY COOKED PANKO CHICKEN NUGGETS” with a “Best If Used By” date of July 18, 2017 and case code 2006SDL03 and 2006SDL33.

20-lb. bulk packages containing “SPARE TIME Fully Cooked, Panko Chicken Nuggets, Nugget Shaped Chicken Breast Pattie Fritters With Rib Meat” with a production date of July 18, 2016 and case code 2006SDL03.

The products subject to the recall bear establishment number “EST. 13556” printed next to the “Best If Used By” date on the back of the package. FSIS noted that the 20-lb. cases were shipped for institutional use in Pennsylvania and the 5-lb. bags were shipped to retail locations nationally.

In a news release, the company said: “Tyson Foods has inspected all lines at the production facility to ensure product quality standards are being met and has implemented corrective measures at all of its facilities to prevent similar occurrences.”
