GRAND VALLEY, Ontario – An animal welfare group released a video the group says depicts animal cruelty and health-related non-compliance issues at a facility operated by Sheik Halal Farms, a halal chicken processing plant in the province of Ontario, Canada.
The organization, Last Chance for Animals, submitted the video along with formal complaints to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Ontario Ministry for Agricultural, Food and Rural Affairs. The group claims grave non-compliance issues occurred at the plant, including birds covered in fecal matter being moved onto the processing line. Last Chance for Animals also claims that halal slaughtering practices were not being met “on many occasions.”
News of the video comes as the Orangeville Banner reported the Ministry of the Environment fined Sheik Halal Farms C$40,000 for discharging sewage into a river tributary more than two years ago.
