OKLAHOMA CITY — Since Sonic Drive-In was acquired by Inspire Brands Inc. in December 2018, the restaurant chain has been churning out innovation. Each month since, Sonic has unveiled at least one new menu item.
One trend among Sonic’s 2019 avalanche of innovation is supersized servings.
In March 2019, the restaurant debuted the Bigger Brunch Burger, featuring two beef patties topped with melted cheese, a double portion of bacon and a fried egg served on a brioche bun.
In April 2019, Sonic unveiled the BBLT, featuring 50 percent more bacon than its traditional sandwiches. The BBLT is made with tomatoes, lettuce and mayo served on a brioche bun.
“With more crispy, savory bacon many of us crave, the BBLT amplifies an all-American classic to offer more of what we love,” said Scott Uehlein, vice president of product innovation and development for Sonic. “Perfect any time, the BBLT will never have you asking for an extra side of bacon again.”
In December 2019, Sonic introduced the Biggie Cheese, a hefty handheld burger made with two 100 percent beef patties, three slices of American cheese, grilled onions, pickles and hickory barbecue sauce stacked double-decker-style on a brioche bun.
“With a whopping three slices of melty cheese and two juicy beef patties, we not only made our classically delicious cheeseburger bigger, we also loaded it up with all the fixings to create a unique Sonic masterpiece,” Uehlein said. “When big hunger calls, the Biggie Cheese answers to the call to satisfy our guests’ cravings.”
Savory bite-size snacks joined the Sonic menu in November 2019. The Chili Cheese Bites are a bite-size version of Sonic’s chili with cheese in a crispy corn chip coating, while the Bacon Mac & Cheese Bites are made with macaroni and cheese blended with bacon pieces and coated in a light, crispy batter.
“The combinations of warm melty cheese with hearty chili or savory bacon and tender macaroni are two of the best things since sliced cheese,” Uehlein said. “The holidays are right around the corner, and these bite-size snacks deliver the beloved, comforting flavors of the season on-the-go to put our guests’ hunger at cheese, during this hectic season.”
