GÜTERSLOH, GERMANY — A meatpacking facility in Western Germany continues to be the source of a coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
German health officials said on June 23 that 1,553 workers at the Gütersloh facility, which is owned by Tönnies Group, have tested positive for the virus.
The company closed the facility last week following hundreds of confirmed cases.
Clemens Tönnies, director of Tönnies Group, said in a tweet on June 21 that the company will provide widespread testing for the Gütersloh district.
Previously, Tönnies said the company would work with district officials on the next steps to stop the spread of the virus.
In response to the recent outbreak, local authorities are closing schools and childcare facilities in the region until the end of the month.
