MINNEAPOLIS — Cargill launched an innovative, non-invasive Near-InfraRed (NIR) technology to provide immediate access to body composition assessments of hens. With the REVEAL Layers technology, producers and nutritionists can make real-time decisions for diets that support flocks’ long-term production and performance.
“REVEAL Layers is part of Cargill’s holistic approach to monitor body fat and egg production, supporting the producer and nutritionist to make educated decisions regarding the diet,” said Lieske van Eck, senior scientist at Cargill. “As we navigate the challenges of feeding a growing global population, these insights pave the way for more sustainable and efficient poultry production.”
Cargill said it is commonly believed that overdeveloped fat pads in laying hens can lead to problems for long-term egg production and optimal liver function.
The company’s REVEAL Layers uses NIR light technology to measure birds’ fat pads. The measurements are uploaded and analyzed, providing actionable data for producers and nutritionists to use.
Benefits of the new technology could include cutting costs, boosting profitability and maximizing egg production, noted Cargill.
Cargill will unveil the REVEAL Layers technology at the 2024 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) beginning on Jan. 30.
