HATFIELD, PA. — Clemens Food Group (CFG) announced on Oct. 4 that its Kunzler business is closing its processing plant in Lancaster, Pa. With the last day of operations set for Dec. 7, 2024, a total of 193 employees will be impacted.

“We understand this news is disappointing and distressing for those who will be affected by the closure of the Lancaster facility,” CFG said in a public statement. “We also recognize that all individuals affected have contributed to Kunzler’s success, and their dedication and hard work have been invaluable to the company’s history. We are committed to supporting these team members during this transition.”

The company is waiting until Dec. 7 to shut down the operation so that it can comply with all remaining production needs from contracted customers. After Dec. 7, CFG plans to continue producing Kunzler branded products so that they are still available to retailers and consumers.

In May 2024, CFG acquired Kunzler & Co. Inc., which included three new production plants for the pork processor — one in Lancaster and two in Tyrone, Pa.

When CFG submitted a WARN Notice to its Lancaster employees, it said, “From the time of acquisition in May of 2024, we made a commitment to all Kunzler team members to be as transparent as possible about any potential changes to operations and to provide regular and timely updates via coordinated company communications. These updates have included operational adjustments, potential plant buyer prospects and statuses, and customer news. Our commitment continues with today’s WARN Notice.”

The company said it will continue to provide consistent work hours and shifts for employees as it tapers off production at the Lancaster plant. CFG is working with UFCW to help ensure a smooth transition for workers.

Work opportunities may be available under new plant ownership, hinted CFG.

“We have had many conversations with an interested buyer and remain committed to sharing information with team members as it becomes available,” CFG said.
