PARIS, FRANCE — In late October, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) and the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) signed a memorandum of cooperation to improve the global trade of poultry products.
According to the document, both groups will work together to overcome issues that hinder trade flow, such as protectionism, health issues and other policies.
Areas listed for collaboration include:
- Environmental or ecological sustainability as a guideline in poultry production and trade
- Animal health, sanitary and food safety regulation based on the principles of sound science and appropriate risk assessment
- Support for the continued development of the poultry industry and international trade
- International relations based on cooperation and negotiation and mediation to resolve differences
- The promotion of sound science and free trade
“We are competitors in the international market, but that does not prevent us from working together and cooperating on issues that are of interest to both countries, as well as to importing nations,” said Ricardo Santin, president of ABPA. “Just like the great stage for global interaction, which is the IPC (International Poultry Council), the construction of high-level bilateral relations, such as the one we have built between ABPA and USAPEEC, are fundamental to strengthening free global trade.”
As part of the agreement, the groups will meet on a periodic bilateral basis in order to encourage the exchange of information and the strengthening of actions.
