WASHINGTON — As part of what has become an annual tradition, the National Chicken Council (NCC) has published its Chicken Wing Report, highlighted by its prediction of the number of wings that will be consumed in the United States during this year’s Super Bowl. During the National Football League’s championship game between the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9, 2025, Americans are expected to eat 1.47 million chicken wings, according to the NCC. This represents approximately 20 million more wings consumed during last year’s Super Bowl (a 1.5% increase) and is the equivalent of every man, woman and child in the United States consuming four wings each.

For many Americans, the attention garnered by food spreads and the commercials during the Super Bowl, eclipse the game itself.

“Sure, there will be pizza, guacamole, chips and dips, but when it comes to the Super Bowl, chicken wings rule the roost,” said Tom Super, spokesperson for the NCC. “Although we do anticipate an uptick in chicken cheesesteaks this year,” Super added as a nod to Philadelphia’s iconic food favorite, the Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Chicken wing consumption has been ramping up during the NFL playoffs leading up to the final game of the year, according to data from market research company, Circana.

For the four weeks ending Jan. 19, 2025, sales of wings ticked up 12% versus the same period last year. In markets represented by playoff-contending teams, combined sales growth topped 15.5% for the period. Sales in the Kansas City Chiefs’ market surged 21.9%, while Philadelphia’s market reported an increase of 19%.
