DES MOINES, IOWA — Stepping down from his position as US secretary of agriculture, Tom Vilsack will join the World Food Prize Foundation as the organization’s new chief executive officer, effective March 1. In this role, Vilsack will leverage his leadership and diplomatic experience to enhance the foundation’s global impact on food security and sustainable agriculture. He served as the leader of the US Department of Agriculture twice, from 2009 to 2017 under the Obama administration and again in 2021, after being appointed by President Joe Biden. Previously, Vilsack served two terms as governor of Iowa.

"The World Food Prize Foundation has a phenomenal and important history of advancing innovation to address global food security," said Vilsack. "I am honored to have the opportunity to build on that legacy, working closely with Mashal Husain and the talented team to extend the Foundation’s impact worldwide. I look forward to forging new partnerships, helping bring to life new solutions in the fight against hunger and championing efforts to ensure a sustainable and equitable food system for future generations."

Vilsack’s work as CEO of the World Food Prize Foundation will focus on expanding its global network, supporting the group’s position as a leader in addressing global food insecurity.

“The foundation is entering an exciting era,” said Foundation Board Chair Paul Schickler. “Secretary Vilsack’s unparalleled diplomatic acumen, cultivated over decades of public service and leadership, uniquely positions him to engage global stakeholders and foster meaningful collaborations.”

No stranger to the World Food Prize Foundation, Vilsack has garnered a two-decade-long relationship with the group. He has served on its council of advisors and board of directors, contributing insights that have helped shaped the group’s mission and initiatives.
